Project Raahat

Project Raahat

Delhi, New Delhi, India

The mission of Raahat is to eradicate open defecation from urban slums of Delhi by innovating in the management of community toilet complexes

Project Description

A brief project description of our food waste/loss project by addressing the following questions:

A majority of toilet complexes lie defunct due to poor sanitation facilities, lack of trained staff, lack of cleanliness, vandalism, security issues and inadequate supply & management of water resource. This has resulted in rampant open defecation and problems such as harassment of women when they go out to relieve themselves in the open and high occurrence of diseases such as dysentery.
The project revolves around 4 pillars, i.e. Management, Sensitization, Aesthetics & Community. We identify entrepreneurs from the community & impart them with professional training, thus ensuring clean toilet complex & sensitizing people about good sanitary practices. This is followed by efforts to beautify the complex through wall arts, greenery, etc. to change perceptions & increase usage.
We aim to eliminate open defecation rate, alleviate the social stigma associated with toilets, provide more than 27,500 people with a safe, hygienic and affordable environment and sensitize them to accept sanitation as a priority. We measure the rate of open defecation curbed and the impact of our efforts qualitatively and quantitatively with the help of surveys and data recording mechanisms.
